Multiple Chemical Sensitivity Etiology

Airway Genetics and Ambient Combustion Aerosol

MCS 2ad Etiology: Proof Positive in a Nutshell

Before and after 2 hours in a freshly painted room:

Plasma marker Substance P (SP) a chemical neurotransmitter:

25 Control Normal subjects plasma levels 38 and 39 before and after paint

25 MCS 105 and 153 before and after paint - ouch!

25 Allergy 75 and 74  - not great but no further rise on the paint

Plasma marker Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide (VIP) another inflammatory regulator:

25 Control Normal 10 and 11 before and after paint

25 MCS 43 and 68 before and after - ouch!

25 Allergy 22 and 21 - no further rise on the paint

Plasma marker Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) - along with SP and VIP indicate airway nerve primary involvement in MCS:

25 Control Normal 148 and 156 before and after paint

25 MCS 1129 and 1696 before and after - high in the stratosphere!

25 Allergy 889 and 896 - no further rise on the paint

Histamine (H) - inflammatory release in many disease conditions:

25 Control Normal 260 and 260 before and after paint

25 MCS 271 and 534 before and after - released from mast cells, an acutely felt ouch that occurs on new or sudden exposure increase

25 Allergy 550 and 560 - ongoing elevated histamine allergic symptoms but no further rise on the paint

In summary:

1) Allergy Subjects

a) no reaction to paint indicated by plasma markers

b) elevated markers before paint indicate reaction to allergen

2) MCS Subjects

a) react to fresh paint - increased SP, VIP, NGF, and H

b) elevated SP, VIP, and NGF before paint indicate ongoing reaction to toxic chemicals in the general ambient environment. H is normal before exposure to paint - sudden increase of toxic exposure - such as the fresh paint - elevates histamine - giving MCS a sometimes allergic outward appearance.
