SPC 21 Solvents and Pesticides Primary: Shoe Fits Glove?

Please choose the Incorrect Statement

SPC 21a)

AUSTRALIAN REVIEW:
"...the majority of respondents could not identify any original cause of their condition. Less than one fifth indicated a "chemical" or "pesticide" exposure as responsible for their hypersensitivity...(Caress 2003)...
...a more recent Canadian survey also revealed a female predominance amongst MCS subjects with the greatest percentage of MCS cases occurring at 45-64 years of age...(Park and Knudson 2007)..."

CANADIAN REVIEW:

"...approximately 60-80% of people diagnosed with environmental sensitivities in various surveys are female (Caress 2004, 2003, 2002) Gibson 2003, Joffres 2001, McKeown-Eyssen 2001, 2000)...

...the prevalence of environmental sensitivities increases with age. For example, the prevalence of unexplained physical symptoms (chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, and multiple chemical sensitivity) in Canadians increases with age from 1.6% of people aged 12 to 24 years to 6.9% in people 45 to 64 years old (Park 2007). In a Statistics Canada survey of Canadian nurses, 1.4% of nurses younger than 35 years reported chemical sensitivities, which increased to 3.7% in nurses 35-44 years old, and 4.3% and 4.8% in successive decades (Statistics Canada 2005). Similarly, in studies in Arizona, 15% of college students and 37% of elderly participants reported heightened sensitivity to chemicals (Caress 2004, Bell 1993)..."

SPC 21b)
For solvents and pesticides to be primary in MCS - men of all ages and younger women would have less exposure to those chemicals than do older women - which is very unlikely.

SPC 21c)
At same length of exposure - a solvent or pesticide may far exceed the harm of vehicle exhaust. However, although there are exceptions - on a cumulative basis the ACA usually exceeds exposure to solvents and pesticides.

SPC 21d)
MCS people aren't genetically sensitive. Decades of continuous exposure to the ACA is not significant - a defective airway of tight junction defects, focal desquamation, and proliferation of nerve fibers (Meggs 1997
) wide open to the CNS - compared to a solid barrier of protective enzymes (Baulig 2009, 2003a) doesn't effect vulnerability to solvents and pesticides.
